Wildlife Rescue NPC is a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) based on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Founded by Lindy Elmes after many years of hands-on animal rescue work, Wildlife Rescue was established to fill a critical gap in wildlife emergency response.
Today, we serve as first-on-scene responders for injured, orphaned, displaced, and vulnerable wildlife across Ballito, Salt Rock, Shaka’s Rock, Zimbali, Simbithi, Westbrook, Tongaat, Stanger, and surrounding areas. Our role is often the first link in the chain of survival.
We respond to emergency call-outs, rescue animals in distress, provide immediate stabilisation, arrange veterinary treatment where required, and work closely with rehabilitation centres to give each animal the best possible chance of returning to the wild.
Our work covers a wide variety of indigenous wildlife species, including:

Every rescue is different. Some involve injured animals requiring urgent medical intervention, while others involve orphaned young, animals trapped in urban environments, vehicle collision victims, electrocution cases, entanglements, poisoning incidents, or wildlife displaced by human activity. Our goal is always the same: to rescue, stabilise, rehabilitate through appropriate partners, and return wildlife to their natural environment whenever possible. Wildlife Rescue works alongside veterinarians, conservation organisations, rehabilitation centres, estate management teams, security companies, community groups, and government authorities to ensure wildlife receives the care and protection it deserves.
Wildlife Rescue is also committed to education, awareness, and promoting peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife. As urban development continues to expand into natural habitats, wildlife increasingly finds itself living alongside human communities. Through public education, community outreach, school talks, and awareness campaigns, we help residents better understand local wildlife and encourage practical, compassionate solutions to human-wildlife conflict. We believe that conservation begins with understanding.
We envision a future where people and wildlife coexist in harmony, where injured and vulnerable animals receive the help they need, and where communities become active participants in protecting the natural heritage that makes our region so unique. As the demand for wildlife emergency response continues to grow, Wildlife Rescue is developing a dedicated wildlife stabilisation facility on the Dolphin Coast. This facility will provide a safe environment where injured and vulnerable wildlife can receive immediate care before being transferred to specialist rehabilitation centres. It will also serve as a hub for volunteers, training, education, and conservation partnerships. The facility represents an important step forward in ensuring that wildlife on the North Coast has access to rapid, professional emergency support when it is needed most.
The North Coast of KwaZulu Natal is rapidly expanding, emerging as a hub for tourism and industry. However, with human expansion, local wildlife is often displaced or decimated due to loss of natural habitat, human activities such as death by vehicles, and human-wildlife conflict when local wildlife is perceived as a threat or nuisance to humans. We have made it our mission to mitigate some of these negative impacts.
We realise that one cannot have wildlife conservation without human well-being and therefore, our aim is firstly to create an understanding in our community of how a robust wildlife population can enhance our lives. We hope to foster a community that is proud of its unique wildlife and is invested in conserving our biodiversity.
Secondly, our vision is to propose and implement practical solutions that will mitigate some of the negative impacts on wildlife in our community, such as encouraging planting of native vegetation, promoting the use of wildlife-friendly rubbish bins, and wildlife overpasses to allow vervet monkeys to safely cross busy roads.
